信息是关键的商品，而实物只不过是信息运动的偶然形态。信息成为电力时代基本的经济商品，信息时代的早期阶段被广告和娱乐方式遮掩得若明若暗、模糊不清，广告和娱乐方式使人看错了路子。广告客户付钱在报刊上买版面，在电台和电视上买时间。换言之，他用钱买到了一部分读者、听众和收视者。

广告也是新闻。广告的错误在于，他们总是报告好消息。为了使效果保持平衡兜售好消息，就需要许多坏消息。……真正有价值的新闻是报忧的消息。作为新闻，水灾、火灾和其他公共灾害的新闻价值超过任何个人的恐怖或罪恶。相比而言，广告必须要高声嚷嚷，宣示它给人愉快的信息，以抗衡恶事传千里的渗透力。

因为对理性的人来说，在新的物质形态中看见或认出自己的经验，是一种无需代价的生活雅兴。

正如任何信息媒介一样，任何游戏都是个人或群体的延伸。它对群体或个人的影响，是使群体或个人尚未如此延伸的部分实现重构。一件艺术品除开它对观赏者产生的影响之外，别无什么存在或功能。与游戏或大众艺术、传播媒介一样，艺术能使人的社群形成新的关系和姿态，它有力量借此将自己的假设强加于人。

和游戏一样，艺术是一种经验转换器。我们曾经在一种情境下感觉到的或看见的东西，突然之间以一种新鲜材料的形式展现在我们眼前。同样，游戏也将熟悉的经验转化为心音的形式，使事物黯淡和模糊的一面放出了光辉。

因此，游戏是人为涉及和控制的情景，是群体知觉的延伸，它们容许人从惯常的模式中得到修正。就整个社会而言，游戏是一种自言自语的行为。而自言自语又是一种公认的游戏形式，这种形式对自信心的增长是必不可少的。

一切媒介均是感官的延伸，感官同样是我们身体能量上的“固持的电荷”。人的感觉也形成了每个人的知觉和经验。

站在与任何结构或媒介保持一定距离的地方，才可以看清其原理和力的轮廓。因为任何媒介都有力量将其假设强加在没有警觉的人的身上。预见和控制媒介的能力主要在于避免潜在的自恋昏迷状态......

在一个有文字的形态同一的社会里，人对多种多样、非连续性的力量，已经丧失了敏锐的感觉。人获得了第三向度和“个人观点”的幻觉。这是他自恋固着的组成部分。

技术媒介就是大宗商品或自然资源，酷似煤炭、棉花和石油……太强调几种大宗商品，就会使经济极不稳定，但是它又造就人们极大的忍受能力……

依靠几种产品而形成的社会，把这些商品当做社会纽带来接受，很像大城市把新闻当做社会纽带一样。棉花和石油，如同收音机和电视一样，在人们的整个精神生活里变成了“固持的电荷”。每一种塑造社会生活的产品，都使社会付出沉重的代价。
